Our team of dedicated, trained counsellors and psychotherapists work with individuals and couples suffering the loss of a pregnancy through miscarriage, termination, and stillbirth and to support those with issues around infertility. We also work with those facing an unplanned pregnancy.

As an organisational member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) we are bound by its Code of Ethics and Practice and Complaints Procedure.

All sessions are confidential unless there are serious concerns about your or others safety. If we are concerned we will always discuss this with you and look at options for further help. Client work is taken into supervision but no clients are ever identified.

The team at Alternatives believe in the intrinsic dignity of every human being, their human rights and the importance of treating all people with respect, hope and value. We offer services on a non discriminatory basis. Alternatives has an Equal Opportunities Policy in place that all staff and volunteers are required to adhere to.

Once you have contacted the service we will book you in for an assessment. The purpose of the initial assessment is to hear an outline of the client's story and to give an overview of who we are and how we work. This gives an indication to whether counselling at this point could be helpful from both the client and counsellors perspective.

Once a counsellor has been allocated they will be in touch to arrange a suitable time to meet. Each session will last for 50 minutes. We suggest an initial 6 sessions which will be reviewed and extended to 12 sessions if needed. These can be extended again to a maximum of 18 sessions to meet the clients needs. If you are going to be late or miss a session, please inform your counsellor as soon as possible so the time can be reallocated for that day.

We do not wish to exclude anyone from counselling on financial grounds. We operate a sliding-scale system which ranges from £20 to £40 for each individual session, or £25 to £60 for a couple session depending on your financial situation. We will give you a client agreement form at your assessment to take away with you. The completed agreement with how much you can pay needs to be brought back to your first session. If a session is missed without 24 hours notice we will ask you to contribute half your agreed fee. As we are a charity this fee enables us to continue our work.

Please note that although we are able to offer clients information on all the options and are well-resourced to provide both immediate and long term support as necessary, we do not refer women directly for termination.
